Barn Orb-Weaver Spiders
Habitat
Barn Spiders are found all over the eastern part United States. They can be found on porches near lights, in the corners of doorways, in window frames -- anywhere conducive for constructing the large orb web. You can even find them on the sides of cliffs, in caves, and in barns!
Food
Like all spiders, orb weavers are carnivores The Barn Spider preys on flying and crawling insects that become entangled in her orb web. The spider will vibrate or sway the web if she senses that prey may be caught in it.
Life Cycle
The female waits on or near her web, letting the males come to her. She lays eggs in clutches of several hundred, encased in a sac. In areas with cold winters, the female orb weaver will lay a large clutch in the fall and wrap it in thick silk. She will die when the first frost arrives, leaving her babies to hatch in the spring. The male might be eaten my the female.
Lifespan
Orb weavers live one to two years, on average.
